  He was given the name of Hew Dalrymple at birth. On 12 February 1796 his name was legally changed to Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple of Bargany on inheriting the Bargany estate from his uncle, John Hamilton. He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Haddingtonshire between 1780 and 1786 and was Auditor of the Exchequer in 1786. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Dalrymple, of North Berwick, co. Haddington [N.S., 1698] on 23 November 1790.
