- Hugh Bogle of Calderbank, Scotland, and Jamaica, scion of a Glasgow-based family of West India merchants and proprietors. His son George Bogle claimed compensation for ownership of enslaved persons in St Thomas-in-the-East as his heir.
Hugh Bogle was the son of Archibald Bogle and his wife Janet Cathcart, therefore the brother of Robert Bogle of Gilmorehill and uncle of Archibald Bogle of Gilmorehill.
Hugh Bogle, Esqr, of Kingston, Jamaica, married Agnes Bogle, the daughter of the late Mr. Michael Bogle, merchant of Glasgow, in Glasgow on 17/12/1799.
Hugh inherited a quarter share of the residuary estate of his brother George in 1813 and with it a quarter ownership of Dunkley's estate in Vere, Jamaica.
- (Research):From Taits directory for 1783 it gives Michael Bogle, timber merchant, Queens Street. Included in this list there are also numerous other Bogles and the following may be considered as ancillary trades/merchants - Bogle Scott & Co upholsterers, Trongate.
Bogle and Scott, timber Merchants, high ftreet.
From PO Directory 1801 it gives Bogle & Son, Timber Merchants, Clyde Street.
1811 PO Directory does not give any Timber Merchants nor is Michael Bogle given ?
He was christened (2 dates in records) 28/4/1734 and 12/5/1734 both at Glasgow, Lanark. In the first the parents are Robert Bogle and Agnes Stuart and in the second the mother is not named for some reason.
His ref no for Glasgow Univ. was 1082/1744. He was a Merchant in Glasgow and died before 1814.
He appears to have been christ, same date as George and John Bogle 9.5.1734 at Glasgow. Their mothers name for the three brothers is Agnes Stuart and not StewartSee under fathers name for explanation.
