- He gained the rank of Cornet in 1866 and of Lieutenant in 1869 in the service of the Royal Horse Guards, retiring from the military in 1869.

He succeeded to the titles of 3rd Earl of Zetland [U.K., 1838] on 6 May 1873, 4th Baron Dundas of Aske, co. York [G.B., 1794] on 6 May 1873 and 5th Baronet Dundas, of Kerse, co. Stirling [G.B., 1762] on 6 May 1873.
