- He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1913 in the service of the Royal Navy. He gained the rank of Acting Lieutenant in 1916. He fought in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, for which he was mentioned in despatches. On 1917 his name was legally changed to Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1918 and Commander in 1920. He was created Earl of Inverness on 3 June 1920. He was created 1st Duke of York [U.K.] & Baron Killarney on 3 June 1920.
He became Admiral of the Fleet on 11 December 1936. He was crowned King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India on 12 May 1937 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England , and styled 'By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. He abdicated as Emperor of India on 22 June 1948, when India secured its independance from Great Britian.
