Notes |
- The 1870 census lists Elam as living with Warren and age 17 (which would imply that Lura was not his mother.) By 1880 he is no longer listed there.
1860 census has him in Wayne Co., PA, Location Wayne Bor, page 817. According to an email from Maxine, Elam never amounted to much and went to Michigan to work as a farm hand. She indicated that he was raised by Aaron and Mary Thomas Dexter though he was living with Warren in 1850 at age 2.

From Maxine Dexter Schauer to Gail Ferris:
"I was looking at the Family Group Sheet on Aaron & Mary and noticed that
another daughter Mary Dexter married to Rockwell Thomas lived at 6 Lakes,
Mich. in 1870. It makes me wonder if Elam was working for them or for
friends of the family in Michigan when he died. Aaron & Mary also had a son
Elam who married Sarah Jerusha Gordon. Hope this helps."

Maxine Dexter Schauer electronic mailing 2/29/2000 to Gail Ferris:
Hi Gail,
Lura and Warren Case had one child named Elam. The following is from a letter
I received from Judith Rush in August 1977. "According to ancient family
gossip, she (Lura) was well out of it :(her marriage) her husband was a notoriously mean
man. He married twice afterward and fathered a huge flock of children by
each wife. Wife No. 3 took no nonsense from him and apparently cowed him at
last. The only child from his marriage to Lura was Chauncey Elam Case, never
married, reared by his grandparents Aaron and Mary Thomas Dexter. He was always called Elam and appears to have been a harmless,
roving type. He died in 1920, alone, working as a hired man at a farm in Michigan. It all sounds a bit sad." End
of quote.
