Notes |
- Dorcas Riddle, a daughter of James and Dorcas Ann (Welch) Riddle, was born about 1773. She married Joseph Hardman. Joseph was born in Germany. The family lived on the banks of the Potomac, not far from the Washington estates. Joseph was also a soldier in the revolutionary war. After residing for seven years at Georgetown, Joseph moved his family to Fredericksburg, Virginia, and there he was a butcher. He accumulated means to enable him to move into the newer country beyond the Alleghenies. With his wife, Dorcas, and three children, he set out in wagons to cross the mountains. For a time he lived in Randolph County, then later continued on to settle on Cedar Creek, in what is now Gilmer County WV in 1797.
