- The book "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865 Vol. 26, page 16 states:
Cass, Columbus, Blissfield. Enlisted in Company K, Twenty-sixth Infantry, as Corporal, Nov. 10, 1862, at Sandstone, for 3 years, age 21. Mustered Dec. 12, 1862. Died of disease at Alexandria, VA, Feb. 22, 1863.
According to Gary Holmes of Blissfield, a history buff on the Civil War, Columbus and several others from Ogden Twp. enlisted at Sandstone, which is near Jackson, MI. It could be that one on them had a reason to enlist in that area and took his friends along.
Columbus is buried in the National Cemetery, Alexandria, VA but his name is on his parents tombstone in Zion Cemetery, Ogden Ctr., Lenawee Co., MI.
