  In the year 1839, Emeline's parents moved from Maine to Bureau County, Ill. She became an orphan at the age of 14. She made her home with a Methodist minister's family by the name of Lathrop. They soon moved t Fondulac County, Wisconsin. Shortly after their arrival, she went to work for Mrs. Worden, Peter Wood's oldest sister. She joined the Methodist Church when she was fifteen. It was while Emeline was working for Mrs. Worden that she and Peter met for the first time. He was twenty three and working land on shares and boarding with his sister. After their marriage the lived with Margaret far a month, then they moved to the farm Peter was working. In the spring Peter built a shanty on a forty acre lot, which he had bought and they moved into it.
