It was "opened for business in a tent with an unplanned board for a counter and an old open trunk as a safe (moved to Canadian Royal Mounted Police jail cell at night). Here, in careless piles, lay thousands of dollars in currency to be traded for gold dust at sixteen dollars an ounce. David Doig, the manager, a shrewd Scot, lived in appropriate style. He enjoyed whisky, cigars, and women, dined on pâté, oysters, and caviar, wore a soft slouch hat and gray flannels in the English style, smoked a small wooden pipe with a white horn mouthpiece, played the harmonium, made a habit of drinking a pint of champagne for breakfast, and brought a general air of sophistication to the community." On the night of April 26, 1899 a fire began in the bedroom of a dance-hall girl on the second floor of the Bodega Saloon. The fire spread and engulfed Dawson in a fiery holocaust. David pledged one thousand dollars to anyone who could save his new bank building from the flames, but his offer was in vain. He appears in Dawson in the 1901 census.

He says that with all the sights that Europe has to show the visitor he finally got tired of them and pined for Dawson. He was accompanied back by H. C. Clark and W. J. B. Pinder, who will enter the services of the bank." On 18 July 1902 it was reported that Mr. Doig has sold some of his interests in local gold claims.
