William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel, also known as William d'Albini, (c. 1109 ? 25 September 1176) was son of William d'Aubigny "Pincerna" (Master Butler of the Royal household) of Buckenham Castle and Maud Bigod, daughter of Roger Bigot.
==Marriage to the King's Widow==
The younger William was an important member of Henry I of England's household. After Henry's death he married the widow Queen consort Adeliza in 1138, and became Lord of Arundel in her right.

He was loyal to Stephen of England, who made him first Earl of Lincoln and then Earl of Arundel (more precisely, Earl of Sussex).
In 1143, as Earl of Lincoln he made two charters confirming a donation of land around Arundel in Sussex to the abbey of Affligem in Brabant (representing his wife Adeliza of Louvain), with William's brother, Olivier, present.

He fought loyally for King Stephen, but in 1153 helped arrange the truce between Stephen and Henry Plantagenet, known as the Treaty of Wallingford, which brought an end to The Anarchy.
When the latter ascended the throne as Henry II, he confirmed William's Earldom and gave him direct possession of Arundel Castle (instead of the possession in right of his wife he had previously had). She had died in 1151. He remained loyal to the king during the 1173 revolt of Henry the Young King, and helped defeat the rebellion.

He succeeded his father in 1176, generally known as Earl of Sussex as the castle of Arundel was retained by the crown on his father's death. They were restored to Earl William in 27 Jun 1190, after which he was referred to as Earl of Arundel[16]. William de Albrini (d'Aubigny), III, surnamed "William with the stronghand," from the following circumstance, as related by William Dugdale:
"It happened that the Queen of France, being then a widow, and a verybeautiful woman, became much in love with a knight from an other country,who was a comely person, and in the flower of his youth; and because shethought that no man excelled him in valor, she caused a tournament to beproclaimed throughout her dominions, promising to reward those who shouldexercise themselves therein, according to their respective abilities; andconcluded that if the person whom she so well affected should act hispart better than others in those military exercises, she might marry himwithout any dishonor to herself. Hereupon divers gallant men, fromforeign parts hasting to Paris, amongst others came this our William deAlbrini, bravely accoutered, and in the tournament excelled all others,overcoming many, and wounding one mortally with his lance, which beingobserved by the queen, she became exceedingly enamored of him, andforthwith invited him to a costly banquet, and afterwards bestowingcertain jewels upon him, offered him marriage; but, having plighted histroth to the Queen of England, then a widow, he refused her, whereat shegrew so discontented that she consulted with her maids how she might takeaway his life; and in purursuance of that design, enticed him into agarden, where there was a secret cave, and in it a fierce lion, untowhich she descended by divers steps, under color of showing him thebeast; and when she told him of its fierceness, he answered, that i it wasa womanish and not a manly quality to be afraid thereof. But having himthere, by the advantage of a folding door, thrust him to the lion; beingtherefore in this danger, he rolled his mantle about his arm, and puttinghis hand into the moutth of the beast, pulled out his tongue by the root;which done, he followed the queen to her palace, and gave it to one ofher maids to present her. Returning thereupon to England, with the fameof this glorious exploit, he was forthwith advanced to the Earldom ofArundel, and for his arms the Lion given him."
He subsequently married Adeliza of Lorraine, Queen of England, widow ofKing Henry I., and the daughter of Godfrey, Duke of Lorraine. Adeliza hadthe castle of Arundel in dowry from her deceased husband, the monarch,and thus her new lord became itits feudal earl, 1st Earl of Arundel in thisfamily. The earl was one of those who solicited the Empress Maud to cometo England, and received her and her brother Robert, Earl of Gloucester,at the port of Arundel, in August 1139, and in three years afterwards(1142), in the report made of King Stephen's taking William de Mandevilleat St. Albans, it is stated "that before he could be laid hold on, heunderwent a sharp skirmish with the king's party, wherein the Earl ofArundel, though a stout and expert soldier, was unhorsed in the midst ofthe water by Walceline de Oxeai, and almost drowned."
In 1150, he wrote himself Earl of Chichester, but we find him styledagain Earl of Arundel, upon a very memorable occasion, namely, thereconciliation of Henry, Duke of Normandie, afterwards King Henry II.,and King Stephen at the siege of Wallingford Castle in 1152. "It wasscarce possible," says Rapin, "for the armies to part without fighting.Accordingly the two leaders were preparing for battle with equal ardor,when, by the prudent advice of the Earl of Arundel, who was on the king'sside, they were prevented from coming to blows." A truce and peacefollowed this interference of the earl's, which led to the subsequentaccession of Henry after Stephen's decease, in whose favor the earl stoodso high that he not only obtained for himself and his heirs the castleand honor of Arundel, but a confirmation of the Earldom of Sussex, ofwhich county he was really earl, by a grant of the Tertium Denarium ofthe pleas of the shire.
In 1164, we find the Earl of Arundel deputed with Gilbert Foliot, Bishopof London, to remonstrate with Louis, King of France, upon according anasylum to Thomas a Becket within his dominions, and on the failure ofthat mission, dispatched with the archbishop of York, the Bishops ofWinchester, London, Chichester, and Exeter, Wido Rufus, Richard deInvecestre, John de Oxford (priests), Hugh de Gundevile, Bernard de St.Valerie, and Henry Fitzgerald, to lay the whole affair of Becket at thefoot of the pontifical throne. Upon levying the aid for the marriage ofthe king's daughter, in the 12th year of Henry II., the knight's fees ofthe honor of Arundel were certified to be ninety-seven, and those inNorfolk, belonging to the earl, fororty-two. In 1173, we find the Earl ofArundel commanding, in conjunction with William, Earl of Mandeville, theking's army in Normandie, and compelling the French monarch to abandonVerneuil after a long siege, and in the next year, with Richard d de Lucy,Justice of England, defeating Robert, Earl of Leicester, then inrebellion at St. Edmundbury. This potent nobleman, after founding andendowing several religious houses, died at Waverley, in Surrey, onOctober 3, 1176, and was buried in the Abbey of Wymondham.

Having captivated the heart of the Queen Dowager of France by his gallantconduct in a tournament at Paris, she offered to marry him, an honourwhich he respectfully declined, having already given his word and faithto a lady in England, another Queen Dowager, no less a personage thanAdeliza, widow of King Henry 1 of England. His refusal so angered theFrench Queen, that she laid a plot with her attendants to destroy him byinducing him to enter a cave in her garden, where a lion had been placedfor that purpose; but the undaunted Earl, rolling his mantle round hisarm, thrust his hand into the lion's mouth, tore out its tongue, and sentit to the Queen by one of her maids. "In token of which noble and valiantact," says Brooke, in his "Catalogue of Nobility," "this William assumedto bear for his arms a lion gold in a field gules, which his successorsever since continued."
As this third William de Albrini died as late as 1176, it is possible bemight have assumed armorial bearings, but the lion was more probablyfirst borne by his son, the second Earl of Arundel of the line ofAubigny, in token of his descent from Adeliza, widow of Henry l, in whosereign we have the earliest evidence of golden lions being adopted as apersonal decoration, if not strictly an heraldic bearing.

In 1150, his lordship wrote himself Earl of Chichester, but we find him styled again Earl of Arundel, upon avery memorable occasion -- namely, the reconciliation of Henry Duke of Normandy (afterwards Henry II) and King Stephen at the siege of Wallingford Castle in 1152. William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel (c. 1109 ? October 12, 1176) was son of a senior William d'Aubigny and Maud le Bigod.
The younger William was an important member of Henry I of England's household. After Henry's death he married the widow Queen consort Adeliza, and became lord of Arundel in her right. He was loyal to Stephen of England, who made him Earl of Arundel (more precisely, Earl of Sussex). In 1143 he was also mentioned as Earl of Lincoln in two charters confirming a donation of land around Arundel to the abbey of Affligem in Brabant (representing his wife Adeliza), with William's brother Olivier present.
In 1153 he helped arrange the truce between Stephen and Henry Plantagenet, known as the Treaty of Wallingford, which brought and end to The Anarchy. When the latter ascended the throne as Henry II, he confirmed William's earldom and gave him direct possession of Arundel Castle (instead of the possession in right of his wife he had previously had). He remained loyal to the king during the 1173 revolt of Henry the Young King, and helped defeat the rebellion.
He and Adeliza were parents to William d'Aubigny, 2nd Earl of Arundel and grandparents to William d'Aubigny, 3rd Earl of Arundel.

William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel (c. 1109 - September 25, 1176) was son of William d'Aubigny Pincerna (Master Butler of the Royal household) of Buckenham Castle and Maud Bigod, daughter of Roger Bigod.

He was loyal to Stephen of England, who made him first Earl of Lincoln and then Earl of Arundel (more precisely, Earl of Sussex).
In 1143 as Earl of Lincoln he made two charters confirming a donation of land around Arundel in Sussex to the abbey of Affligem in Brabant (representing his wife Adeliza of Louvain), with William's brother Olivier present.

William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel was created 1st Earl of Arundel [England] circa 1138. In 1139 he gave shelter to the Empress Maud at Arundel Castle, but ever after adhered to King Stephen.2 He held the office of Lord of the Manor of Buckenham, Norfolk in 1139. In 1153 he was influential in arranging the treaty where King Stephen retained the corwn for life, but with Henry II as heir. In 1163/64 he was one of the embassy to Rome. In 1168 he was one of the embassy to Saxony. He wawas commander of the Royal army in Normandy, against the King's rebellious sons, where he distinguished himself with "swiftness and velocity" in August 1173. He fought in the battle near Bury St. Edmunds on 29 September 1173, where he assisted in the defeat of the Earl of Leicester who had, with his Flemings, invaded Suffolk.

Henry I's widow Adeliz married in 1138 William d'Aubigny, who the next year, probably as a result, was created Earl of Lincoln. William's father was a Norman immigrant to England in Henry I's reign. His son, who by this advantageous marriage came into the former Queen's dowry of Arundel Castle, together with its Honour (feudal administrative unit embodying several knight's fees), has been held thereby to have become Earl of Arundel. By 1142 he had been deprived of his Earldom of Lincoln, indeed even before, was spoken sometimes as Earl of Arundel and sometimes as Earl of Chichester or Earl of Sussex.
William de Albini, surnamed "William with the strong hand," from the following circumstance, as related by Dugdale:--- "It happened that the Queen of France, being then a widow, and a very beautiful woman, became much in love with a knight oof that country, who was a comely person, and in the flower of his youth: and because she thought that no man excelled him in valour, she caused a tournament to be proclaimed throughout her dominions, promising to reward those who should exercise themselves therein, according to their respective demerits; and concluding that if the person whom she so well affected could act his part better than the others in those military exercises, she might marry him without any dishonour to herselff. Hereupon divers gallant men, from forrain parts hastening to Paris, amongst others came this our William de Albini, bravely accoutered, and in the tournament excelled all others, overcoming many, and wounding one mortally with his lance, which being observed by the queen, she became exceedingly enamoured of him, and forthwith invited him to a costly banquet, and afterwards bestowing certain jewels upon him, offered him marriage; but, having plighted his troth to the Queen of England, then a widow, he refused her, whereat she grew so much discontented that she consulted with her maids how she might take away his life; and in pursuance of that design, enticed him into a garden, where there was a secret cave, and in it a fierce lion, unto which she descended by divers steps, under colour of shewing him the beast; and when she told him of its fierceness, he answered, that it was a womanish and not a manly quality to be afraid thereof. But having him there, by the advantage of a folding door, thrust him in to the lion; being therefore in this danger, he rolled his mantle about his arm and, putting his hand into the mouth of the beast, pulled out his tongue by the root; which done, he followed the queen to her palace and gave it to one of her maids to present her. Returning thereupon to England, with the fame of this glorious exploit, he was forthwith advanced to the Earldom of Arundel, and for his arms the lion given him."
He subsequently obtained the hand of the Queen Adeliza, relict of King Henry I, and daughter of Godfrey, Duke of Lorraine, which Adeliza had the castle of Arundel in dowry from the deceased monarch, and thus her new lord became its feudal earl. The earl was one of those who solicited the Empress Maud to come to England, and received her and her brother, Robert, Earl of Gloucester, at the port of Arundel, in August, 1139, and in three years afterwards (1142), in the report made of Kinng Stephen's taking William de Mandevil at St. Albans, it is stated -- "that before he could be laid hold on, he underwent a sharp skirmish with the king's party, wherein the Earl of Arundel, though a stout and expert soldier, was unhorsed in ththe midst of the water by Walkeline de Oxeai, and almost drowned." In 1150, his lordship wrote himself Earl of Chichester, but we find him styled again Earl of Arundel, upon a very memorable occasion -- namely, the reconciliation of Henry Duke of Normandy (afterwards Henry II) and King Stephen at the siege of Wallingford Castle in 1152. "It was scarce possible," says Rapin, "for the armies to part without fighting. Accordingly the two leaders were preparing for battle with equal ardour, when, by the prudent advice of the Earl of Arundel, who was on the king's side, they were prevented from coming to blows." A truce and peace followed this interference of the earl's, which led to the subsequent accession of Henry after Stephen's decease, in whose favour the Earl stood so high that he not only obtained for himself and his heirs the castle and honour of Arundel, but a confirmation of the Earldom of Sussex, of which county he was really earl, by a grant of the Tertium Denarium of the pleas of that shire. In 1164, we find the Earl of Arundel deputed with Gilbert Foliot, bishop of London, to remonstrate with Lewis, King of France, upon affording an asylum to Thomas ? Becket within his dominion, and on the failure of that mission, despatched with the archbishop of York, the bishops of Winchester, London, Chichester, and Exeter, -- Wido Rufus, Richard de Invecestre, John de Oxford (priests) -- Hugh de Gundevile, Bernard de St. Valery, and Henry Fitzgerald, to lay the whole affair of Becket at the foot of the pontifical throne. Upon levying the aid for the marriage of the king's daughter, 12th of Henry II [1165-66], the knights' fees of the honour of Arundel were certified to be ninety-seven, and those in Norfolk belonging to the earl, forty-two. In 1173, we find the Earl of Arundel commanding, in conjunction with William, Earl of Essex, the king's army in Normandy, and compelling the French monarch to abandon Verneuil after a long siege, and in the next year, with Richard de Lucy, justice of England, defeating Robert Earl of Leicester, then in rebellion at St. Edmundsbury. This potent nobleman, after founding and endowing several religious houses, departed this life at Waverley, in Surrey, on the 3 October, 1176, and was buried in the abbey of Wymondham. His lordship left by Adeliza, his wife, widow of King Henry I, four sons and three daughters, the eldest of whom, Alice, m. John, Earl of Ewe. The eldest son, Willliam de Albini, 2nd earl, had a grant from the crown, 23rd Henry II [1177-8] of the Earldom of Sussex, and in the 1st of Richard I [1189-90], had a confirmation from that prince of the castle and honour of Arundel, as also of the Tertium Denarium of the county of Sussex. William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel (c. 1109 - September 25, 1176) was son of William d'Aubigny Pincerna (Master Butler of the Royal household) of Buckenham Castle and Maud Bigod, daughter of Roger Bigod.
The younger William was an important member of Henry I of England's household. After Henry's death he married the widow Queen consort Adeliza in 1138, and became Lord of Arundel in her right.
He was loyal to Stephen of England, who made him first Earl of Lincoln and then Earl of Arundel (more precisely, Earl of Sussex).
In 1143 as Earl of Lincoln he made two charters confirming a donation of land around Arundel in Sussex to the abbey of Affligem in Brabant (representing his wife Adeliza of Louvain), with William's brother Olivier present.
He fought loyally for King Stephen, but in 1153 helped arrange the truce between Stephen and Henry Plantagenet, known as the Treaty of Wallingford, which brought an end to The Anarchy.
When the latter ascended the throne as Henry II, he confirmed William's Earldom and gave him direct possession of Arundel Castle (instead of the possession in right of his wife he had previously had). She had died in 1151. He remained loyal to the king during the 1173 revolt of Henry the Young King, and helped defeat the rebellion.
He and Adeliza were parents to William d'Aubigny, 2nd Earl of Arundel and grandparents to William d'Aubigny, 3rd Earl of Arundel.
