In December 1881 he was ajudged bankrupt in the sum of £3,387.
In 1882 the Lord Clerk Register of Scotland had denied the Lordship's very existence before a Select Commitee.
Walter fought in the First World War, with the Rifle Brigade, even though aged 76. He was King's Messenger. He was decorated with the Grand Officer, Crown of Belgium in 1915. He was created 1st Baron Ruthven of Gowrie, of Gowrie [U.K.] on 28 October 1919.
