- He was given the name of John James Hope at birth. His name was legally changed to John James Hope Johnstone. He held the office of Hereditary Steward of Annandale and Hereditary Keeper of Lochmaben Palace on 28 August 1818. He succeeded to the title of 7th Lord Johnstone [S., 1662], de jure & 7th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell [S., 1662] on 28 August 1818, de jure. In 1820 he claimed the Annandale titles, and advertised for rival claimants. On 11 June 1844 his claim for the Annandale titles was disallowed. In 1876 he repsented a further claim for the Annandale titles, but died before making further progress.
