  When Mary Anne's husband drowned, she had no clear title to their land. So she walked from Bathurst to the capital in Fredericton by herself to appeal to the government to grant her title to the land in her own name. In time Queen Victoria heard about this journey of a woman alone the many miles through the fo- rests and was so impressed by her hardiness that she granted her the right to the land, the minerals under the ground, the birds in the air in perpetuity. : Reported by Evelyn Ross from her conversation with local parish priest (1949).
