- As her mother died when she was three years old, Gerda was brought up by her paternal grandmother. Gerda graduated with an M.D. degree from the University of Manitoba in 1937. She later earned a B.Sc. (Med) degree in bacteriology while assistant provincial bacteriologist. She became a child psychiatrist when she received her F.R.C.P. degree in 1957. She was on the staff of the Winnipeg General Hospital and the Children's Hospital. She was University of Manitoba associate professor in child psychiatry and psycho-pharmacology. She was president of the Manitoba Psychiatric Association and the Medical Faculty Wives Association at the same time.
