  Born in Stayner, Ontario, in 1904, Gerard moved with his parents to Winnipeg in 1910. He graduated with an M.D. degree from the University of Manitoba in 1929 and did post-graduate studies in London and Vienna. He was made a member of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 1932. He began practicing medicine in Winnipeg in 1935. Gerard was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and the American College of Physicians. He was a life member of the Winnipeg Medical Association, the Manitoba Medical Association, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, and the Canadian Medical Association, where, as a member of its committee, Gerard helped to achieve the first pension plan for doctors.
