Notes |
- He was a brilliant student of Latin and Greek and probably would have gone to Oxford had scholarships or student grants been available. He was captain of his school's football and cricket teams and was later Head Boy. He was appointed to the Royal Naval College in Greenwich as a Probationary Flying Officer in 1917, qualified as lieutentant and earned his wings about the time of the Armistice. He became a solicitor and was borough coroner from 1932-36. In World War II he was major in 9th Suffolk Home Guard.
