- He was born an. 1640, and married his first cousin, Margaret, only daughter of Sir James Steuart, the first of Coltness: In consequence of his connection with his father-in-law and uncle, Sir James, and his brother-in-law, Sir Thomas Steuart, he was persecuted in the troublesome times which preceded the revolution, and fined by the council, in 1684, ??500 Sterling for favouring the covenanters.
