A few web sites suggest that William Malet's mother was a daughter ofLeofric, Earl of Mercia (who died in 1057). Whilst it is surely morelikely that she was a generation or two before rather than after theEarl, because Leofric's wife was Lady Godiva, sister of Sheriff Thoroldwho is shown below as husband of 'the Countess Lucy' (William Malet'sgranddaughter), such a connection might help explain why Lucy issometimes referred to as a daughter of Aelfgar, Leofric's son andsuccessor.
