- "Sir William Bruce of Escariot, France
It has not been proved that this William was a grandson of Sir Robertof Airth BUT:
- it is known that he was "a cadet of the house of Bruce of Clackmannan"(per 'Fife' identified below).
- TSP (Elgin & Ailesbury) reports that Earlshall was a cadet of Bruce ofAirth, itself a cadet of Clackmannan.
- the dates indicate that there cannot be many intervening generations.
'The Bruces of Airth and their Cadets' reports that Sir Alexander, 1st ofEarlshall, was the younger son of Sir Alexander Bruce of Airth &Stenhouse (who died in 1488) but, were that truly the case, there wouldsurely not have been such uncertainty on the ancestry of this branch ofthe Bruces.
(A) Sir Alexander Bruce, 1st of Earlshall (d 1504)"
