W.L. Douglass Ends 20 - Year Army Career
"Jobs were scarce during the depression, so I thought the best thingto do would be to enter the Army," said Walter L. Douglas, son of Mr.and Mrs. Walter M. Douglas, 3 Cronkhite St. Douglas joined the Armyin August, 1928, and last week, 20 years later, he retired from theAir Force at Chanute Field (near Champaign, Illinois) and received aletter of merit from the commanding general there.
Douglas attended Danville High School (Vermillion County, Illinois)and worked as helper at the C&EI shops prior to his military service.Before World War 2, he served in the Phillipine Islands and duringhostilities served four years in Alaska. He saw service in theAsiatic-Pacific, and European Theaters after the war.
He has served at various bases throughout the United States andattended aircraft mechanics school at Chanute Field, Douglas Aircraft,Santa Monica, Calif., and the Boeing B29 school at Seattle, Wash.
