  He succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Carnegie, of Pittarrow, co. Kincardine [N.S., 1663] on 30 April 1765. He sold estate of Pittarrow in 1767 to George Carnegie. He greatly improved the estate of Kinnaird, building what is now Kinnaird Castle. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Montrose Burghs between 1784 and 1790. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Forfarshire between 1796 and 1806.
