  He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the service of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He was decorated with the award of Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.). He succeeded to the title of 11th Baronet Clayton, of Marden, co. Surrey [G.B., 1732] on 19 October 1951.
