Marriage |
- This marriage is challenged:
Robert was first married to Margaret (unknown surname) and by her had two sons, William (heir) and Robert. She was reportedly alive in 1343, so Robert's second marriage to Ellen Heton occurred some time after this date, but by 1347, and by whom he may have had two additional sons, John and possibly Adam. It has not been determined, however, whether Adam was the product of Robert's first or second marriage. Conversely, Collins in The Peerage of England, claimed that all four sons were children of Robert's second marriage to Ellen Heton. This seems unlikely, however, given Robert's date of birth and the fact that his brother William was heir to his father's estate, suggesting that William was the firstborn son.
The Dictionery of National Biography states:
Sir Robert's wives were Margaret and a certain Ada.

Notes |
- Etal Castle was built around 1341 by Robert Manners in the village of Etal, after Robert was granted a licence to crenellate by King Edward III in order to defend the location against the Scots. The Manners family had owned the manor since at least 1232.
