"During the reign of David II (1329-1371), the de Vaux male line endedand the Dirleton passed to Sir John Haliburton by marriage to one of thede Vaux daughters in 1340. "At the 1st battle of Nisbet in 1355 John Halyburton of Dirleton waskilled while helping Ramsay of Dalhousie, Dunbar of Dunbar castle andDouglas of Tantallon castle defeat the English garrison from Norhamcastle. Surprisingly, a few years later in 1363 Douglas and Dunbar turnedon the Halyburtons and seized Dirleton castle in their first steps ofrebellion against King David II of Scots for his attack on Kildrummycastle. This led to the battle of Lanark where Douglas and Dunbar weredefeated by King David and forced to sue for peace. Dirleton was thenreturned to the Halyburtons." About Patrick (yr of Hailles) Hepburn, shown here as husband of Beatrix(of Dirleton) de Vaux.
"For his "good and faithful service" Sir Patrick granted him estates inEast Lothian including Hailes and Traprain. Adam's son, Sir Patrick ofHailes, and grandson, Patrick Younger of Hailes, both distinguishedthemselves in the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. Fourteen years later theyounger Patrick fell in the Battle of Nisbet Moor with, family historyrelates, "the flower of youth of East Lothian"
