Notes |
- Descended from the Morton line of Douglas. Came in the retinue of James 6th/1st in 1603 on his accession to the English throne. The King granted possession of land near Reath (Reeth) in Yorkshire.
There is a possibility that he was related to Sir George Douglas of Kirkness (d.by 12.1609).
- (Research):Alexander is supposed to have married a daughter of Marmaduke Langdale and Lennox Rhodes in 1623 at Dowthorpe, Yorkshire.
However records indicate that Marmaduke and Lennox did not marry until 1626.
Their three daughters, Lennox, Mary and Anne were born between 1629 and 1638.
We also know that Lennox married Cuthbert Harrison and Mary married Robert Prickett.
We don't know who Anne married but it cannot have been Alexander as she wasn't born in 1623.
It has been suggested that Alexander may have married a relative of Peter Langdale, Marmadukes father; and this seems to be far more plausible.
Kenneth Douglas suggests the following:
It is definite that "A. Langdale"; for various reasons, was not one of the daughters of Marmaduke Langdale (1598 -1661) and Lenox R(h)odes. However if we go back to Marmaduke's father; Peter Langdale we find that he died in 1617 and his widow was Anne Langdale (Nee Wharton [1576-1646]). My theory is that Alexander Douglas (1585-1661) did marry (or formed a relationship with) "A. Langdale". At the time of Peter Langdale's death his wife Anne would have been 41 years old and Alexander Douglas 32 years old.
