  He was chairman of Burns Steamship Company Ltd. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Dumbartonshire. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Inverclyde of Castle Wemyss, co. Renfrew [U.K., 1897] on 8 October 1905. He became a Master of the Company of Shipwrights in 1918.
