- Matthew James writes:
"I am descended on my mother's side from John Philip Morier and I hopethat I
can help you to fill in some of the blanks in your entry:-
John Philip Morier was born in 1776, one of the sons of Isaac Morier
(1750-1817) who was married to one of the three daughters of David van
Lennep, a Dutch diplomat. Isaac died of plague in Constantinople, having
been a diplomat there, and John Philip following in his father'sfootsteps;
he was British ambassador to both Turkey and Egypt. Isaac Morier was bornin
Chateau d'Oex in Switzerland, but the family were originally French
Huguenots, expelled form France in 1685 when Louis XIV revoked the Edictof
Nantes which had hitherto granted toleration to Protestants.
John Philip Morier married Horatia Maria Frances Seymour (1786-1853) in
1814. She was the daughter of Lord Admiral Hugh Seymour (1759-1801) andAnna
Horatia Waldegrave (1759-1801). They had several children."
