Graythwaite Hall: Graythwaite Hall designed by Thomas Mauson in 1890 ison the west side of Windermere, not far from Hill Top, where Ransomespent his last years, and Rusland, where he is buried. The Sandys familyhave lived at the Hall for over 500 years.
William Sandys (died circa 1548) who married to Margaret Dixon (diedafter 1548) owned Graythwaite Hall even though his principal residencewas Esthwaite Hall. William and his wife are entombed in the SandysChoir, in St Michael's Church, Hawkshead. Although the date of William'sis death disputed, documents prove that it was obviously between 23 April1546, when he signed his will, and 1549, when the Duchy of Lancasterrecords quote him as being deceased. These records refer to a case filedagainst his sons William & Christopher Sandys as to their legal right tosmithies fees from 'Furnace Fells' jointly granted to their father and aWilliam Sawrey by Henry VIII. William & Margaret had the followingchildren; (1) George, died on 10 September 1547 in battle on the field ofMusselburg, resided at Graywaite and Field Head in Hawkshead. (2)William, died about 1558; resided in Colton Hall and Cornishead Priory;was Bailiff of the Liberties in Furnace.(3) Edwin, (4) Christopher diedin April 1588, and was buried on 15 April 1588 in Hawkshead Church,England. (5) Myles was a resident of Latimers and Isthahamp ?, Bucks andBrimpsfield, Gloucester Co., and of the Middle Temple, London. He wasHigh Sheriff of Gloucester. (6) Anthony, died about November 1591, wasburied on 13 November 1591 in Hawkshead Church, England. His descendant,Major George Owen Sandys occupied Esthwaite Hall in 1915 and (7) Anne.
In 1708 Myles Sandys, of Graythwaite Hall, was Sheriff of Lancashire. Thegarden at Graythwaite Hall, in the Lake District, was designed by T. H.Mawson in 1896.
