Shaw contributes: My Gt. GT GT Grandfather, Robert Douglas of Ardrossan, had a fleet of sailing ships importing tobacco from Virginia and visited West Indies regularly, one of his brothers was resident there and Sir James Douglas, Gov. of Vancouver 1858 ( a cousin ) was born in Demerara British Guiana 5.6.1803 , his mother was a Miss Richie, a Creole lady of Demerara.
Robt. Douglas of Ardrossan wrote a journal of his sea voyages -and family - which we have reproduced in our book 'A Douglas! A Douglas ! ( by Mary Smith and me, Janet Shaw )
Robert Douglas of Ardrossan b. 1759, ( who was William of Leith's Grandson,) wrote lengthy journals of his family and his life at sea in the tobacco trade with Virginia USA . He mentions his cousin Cecilia Douglas b.1772 ( wife of Gilbert Douglas of Douglas Park ) when he & his wife were visiting relatives around Glasgow, in 1806 and again in 1813. " We made an excursion to Douglas Park, but had not the pleasure of meeting Mr and Mrs Douglas there from their being then at Harrowgate for the benefit of their health . That estate is situated near Hamilton, about 10 miles from Glasgow and was purchased by Mr. Gilbert Douglas soon after his marriage to my cousin, Miss Cecilia Douglas, then a beautiful young lady about twenty years old. Mr Douglas was much older, whose kind attention to her comforts gained her affections and his generosity towards Cecilia was appreciated. A new house was being built with a large garden and ormental grounds around it." and in 1813, " I was in Glasgow where I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Gilbert Douglas , whose company I was later deprived of enjoying, owing to a serious accident which happened to her when her carriage was upset going from Glasgow to Douglas Park"
