  He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England and at Christ Church, Oxford University He fought in the Second World War, in North Africa, where he was decorated with the award of the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1943, and Italy. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Lothians and Border Horse. He was decorated with the Territorial Decoration (T.D.). He was admitted to Royal Company of Archers.
