- Lt Col. Raymond Varley Dewar Durie of Durie, established
his claim to the chieftainship of the clan Durie in 1988. He served in
the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders for 35 years and was in Shanghai
when it fell to the Japanese; he escaped by making a journey of 2,000
miles to Chungking for which he was mentioned in despatches. As
assistant military attaché, he was responsible for the evacuation of
wounded from HMS Amethyst in 1949 during the Chinese civil war. Lt
Col. Durie died aged 93 in March 1999 and was succeeded by his son,
Andrew.
The Dewar Durie family have an entry in 'BLG-The Kingdom of Scotland'
under the title of 'Durie of Durie' as the grandfather Andrew's father
Lt-Col Raymond Dewar Durie(b.1905-d.1999) was recognised as 14th
representer of the Duries of Craigluscar and then Durie of Durie by
the Ld.Lyon King of Arms in May 1988.
