Notes |
- Described in Debrett's as 'of Leith'
'Distantly related to the Marquis Douglas'
- (Research):13 Feb 1795 In Monteith Close, Edinburgh, death of Mr John Douglas, Albany Herald, uncle of Sir Andrew Snape Douglas, Captain of the Royal Navy
Thus he must be Dr William's brother.
His coat of arms suggests that he is of the Douglas of Mains branch
Dr William Douglas, MD of Leith was married to Lydia Hamond, who was the sister of Sir Andrew Snape Hamond, both being the children of Robert Hamond of Blackheath and Susanna Snape. (Burkes gentry which also gives Lydia as Andrew's sister) I base this also on the Will of Andrew Snape Hamond (National Archives, London) who calls Andrew Snape Douglas, Captain, his nephew. Burke also says Lydia Hamond and Wm Douglas had a daughter also called Lydia.
