  He joined the RN as a Midshipman on 4th JAN 1904 (aged 12), was promoted to Lieutenant on 15 DEC 1913, to Captain of HMS Kennet on 4th AUG 1916 and to Lt Cdr 15 JUN 1921. He commanded nine (9) RN ships, HMSs Kennet, Rifleman, Cameleon, Sarpedon, Tlbury, Voyager, Vecus, Sparrowhawk and Whirlwind; He retired from the RN (at his own request) 23 AUG 1926.
