I wonder if this is a correct "Elizabeth" for our Joshua case. A Elizabeth Dickerson married an Andrew Wager, son of Charles, on Jan 21, 1743 at Southold, LI, NY. They later moved to Morris Cty, NJ. A Genealogy book written about the Dickerson Family (Don't have title, but author is Wesley Baker) He states that Elizabeth daughter of Thomas did not mary a Joshua Case and could not have as she was married to Andrew Wager and he was still alive to witness a will in 1781. I have not found any documentation either as to who Joshua married too. So Dickerson researchers feel Elizabeth married Andrew and he lived till after the Revolution, so who did Joshua marry and where are the records? I find that our "Case" ancestors did not leave us many clues. Another Case researcher e-mailed me info about Joshua that he died 9 July 1777 age 56, and is buried in Succasunna, NJ. May have died of Small Pox as an epidemic was going on at that time. His will dated 1 Jul 1777, proved 16 Aug 1777 (Lib 19, pg. 138) states wife "Elizabeth". My thought is we need to find a record/document to prove who Joshua was married to. Otherwise most of our information is just "Family Lore".

See: Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, Vol.1, p. ?Serial: 8399; Volume: 7, DAR for Joshua Case bur. Succasunna NJ 24.

Also in The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 39 page 53: "His sons, Samuel, Joseph and Augustus, and son-in-law, Daniel Pedmore, also served in the war. "

Some say Joshua born in RI.

On my last visit to NJ I located Joshua's grave. He is buried in the 1st Presbyterian Church Cemetery on Main St. in Succasunna, NJ. His stone is in excellent condition. It is made of red sandstone and reads: In memory of Joshua Case who departed this life July the 9th 1777 aged 55 years.
I didn't see a stone for his wife but there were a good number of Dickersons buried in the same area. If you go looking, His grave is on the right side of the church as you face it from Main St. and Very close to the Building.

Joshua married Elizabeth Youngs in Mar 1743 in Suffolk Co., NY. Elizabeth and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Elizabeth Youngs and died.

Add me to the list searching for info on the brothers, Theophilus, Christopher, Butler and Reuben Case. I hope my results help you out. I ran across the "rumor" about coming from Holland in the "Diary of Zophar Case," where he writes a "Geneologic(h)al memorandum of the ancestors and descendants -MESHACH CASE - Paternal Line - Holland [the brothers]came to the colonies about 1750 landed on Long Island - passed on to the Jerseys. Butler married a woman of Irish des(c)ent at Morris County, a Miss Carnes." Zophar was a son of Meshach, who was one of Butler's children. It appears that Zophar was unaware that his ancestors had been living on LI since about 1640. But they probably lived in Holland after leaving England with the Puritans in their exodus (my guess). According to Long Island Genealogy the four brothers descend from William who married Martha Corwin. Ref: www.longislandgenealogy.com and www.lihistory.com. Zophar's handwritten journal was obtained from the Ohio His. Soc.

    Subject: Case diary

I came across a diary in the Ohio Historical Society's manuscript collection today that may interest those with NE Ohio Case connections. It is "Vol 400" in the manuscript collection and is listed as the Diary of Zophar Case. The diary is a small triple fold (leather?), about 4 by 6 inches. It appears to have been written about 1829. I had only limited time and the book cannot be xeroxed but the frontpiece says, "Genealogical memorial of the ancestors and descendent of Meshach Case", followed by a few journal entries of his trip west. The best part of it though is the last 6 or 8 pages where he details the family genealogy. I did not have time to copy out very much but here is the bit on the oldest generations (punctuation and spelling are as written, the pages are torn in a couple spots and in others stuck together so if I couldn't read it I have question marks). Although I didn't have time to write it
all out (and will not be back to OHS anytime soon) I did read over the genealogy and Zophar was brother to Leonard Case of Case Western University fame. And unfortunately that means the diary has no connection to "my" Case family -- maybe some of you will have better luck.

    "Paternal Line Holland
Theophilus Christopher Butler and Reuben Case brothers came to the Colonies about 1750 landed on Long Island - passed on to the Jerseys. Butler married a woman of Irish disent at Morris County, a Miss Carney.
There they had issue Meschach Elizabeth who married David Sutton and had a large family who removed from the Jerseys to Westmoreland County Pennsylvania. Thence to Shenango. Butler who married Miss Sarah Pugh,
they had numerous issue, viz Reuben, Butler, Sarah, Thom?? and various others died in 1833 or 1834 in Medina Co Ohio.
Rachel married John Sheplor & had many children & died in Westmoreland Co PA one of them Matthias went to Congress = Dyrn married Caleb Brown and had a faily removed & died in Wayne Co Ohio had several children
Reuben married Hannah Bergin had many children removed to near Zanesville Ohio
Sarah married a Mr Phon?? had a family all three marriages took place in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania where the family came about 1778 or 1779 and there Meshach married Mgdalene Eckstein."

Theophilus married Hannah Mapes in 1708 in Southold, Long Island, Suffolk Co., New York, USA. Hannah and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
