Charles Frederick St. Clair Anstruther of Charleton was baptised with the name of Charles Frederick St. Clair Anstruther-Thomson. He was admitted to Royal Company of Archers. He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1900, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was decorated with the award of Knight Commander, Order of Isabella the Catholic of Spain. He was decorated with the award of Officer, Legion of Honour. He was decorated with the award of Knight Commander, Order of the Sword of Sweden. He was invested as a Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.). He was decorated with the award of Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1900. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.). He gained the rank of Brevet-Colonel in the service of the 2nd Life Guards. His name was legally changed to Charles Frederick St. Clair Anstruther. He succeeded to the title of 19th Lord St. Clair in 1904, but for the attainder. He was invested as a Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in 1905.
