- "OBITUARY
JAMES L. SHOAF, son of William and Elmina Shoaf was born in SugarCreek Twp., Parke Co., Ind. Jan 27, 1867. He was one of a largefamily of brothers and sisters, but only one brother, Arista Shoaf ofHarveysburg survives. Sept. 3, 1891 James was united in marriage toMaggie Clore and to this union 5 children were born. Onia L. who diedNov. 9, 1918, Ora A. near Covington, William N. near Sylvania, JamesR. near Boswell and Ethel M. Floyd near Newtown. Thirty seven yearsago he and his wife bought their home in Sugar Creek Twp., where hespent the last years of his life and where he passed out of this lifeJuly 26, 1944 having reached the age of 77 yrs. 5 mo. and "Uncle Jim",as he was familiarly known, was a kind and obliging neighbor alwaysready and willing to help in any way he could. He was a veryindustrious man always looking well to the interests of his home andfamily but for some time he has been in failing health but owing tohis energetic nature he would not give up until 5 mo. ago, due to theserious nature of his ailment he was forced to go to bed and throughthe long and weary weeks of suffering he was tenderly cared for by hisdevoted wife and children, who can say they never heard him complainof his condition but greeted all with a kind word and smile. Besidesthe wife, 3 sons, 1 daughter and 1 brother, he leaves 19grandchildren. Two grandsons are in the Service Charles Shoaf,somewhere in France and William Junior Floyd in Camp Bridg, NorthCarolina.
As we bid farewell to this friend we will say---
Peace to his memory, Life's trials are past.
The tired hands folded In a rest that will last.
We still have our life's work Lord help us till done,
That we may be ready when our summons shall come.
This obit was written on a brown grocery bag. I believe it waswritten by either Leona Miller or Ivy Downs, most likely the last.Wherever I have typed an obit, I have tried to use the same spellingsand as near to the original as possible----sometimes I have to guess.This obit was typed by Margaret Pithoud Buser."
