- IN THE 1850 - JACKSON COUNTY - HAMILTON TWP. - PAGE 097 CENSUS:Norval Hamilton 25 m/w Farmer b. IN. was living in the household ofJames C. Graham and Mary Reynolds Elkins Graham. Norval Hamiltoncould be just a friend or worker or near relative (this is morelikely). He came to Parke County about the same time as James andMary. He married, raised his family and died in Green Twp.

NORVAL HAMILTON - farmer and miller, Bellemore, was born in RipleyCounty, Indiana, November 18, 1826 and is the son of John and MarthaH. (Buchanan) Hamilton, both born in Kentucky. He is of Scotch-Irishdescent, and was educated when and where "Lickin and Lamin" wenttogether. He and his brother cleared ten acres of land when boys, andbroke it with a wooden mold-board plow. He was five years old whenhis parents moved to Jackson County, Indiana. His father was a millwright, carpenter, cabinet maker and brick mason, and at the time ofhis death took place in 1846, he was county clerk. His father was agood moral man, never known to swear or to drink. His mother was amember of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hamilton owns a sawmill on theBig Racoon River, at the corners of Adams, Florida, and Racoontownships, and is doing a thriving business. He also rents a farm inUnion Twp. He was married, November 05, 1853 to Mary Jane Cress, andhas a large family by this union: Lynergus, Orlando, Lazora, Warren,Laura, Wilber, Garret (who was killed in the sawmill), Henry, MarthaM., Alva E., John (now desceased), Perry R., Luetta and Ora. Mr.Hamilton, was in the front during the Mexican War. He participated inthe battle of Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Puebla, Contreras, churubuseo,Molino Del Rey, and Chapultepee. Mr. Hamilton, by the act of braverywas the first man to enter Helen Gate on that memorable 13th day ofDecember, 11847. For his act he received a certificate of merit and apension of $2.00 a month. He belonged to col. Smith's Regt of mountedriflemen, Co. G., under Capt. John S. Siminson. When crossing theGulf of Mexico he slept by the side of Gen. Scott's horse. He isproud of his war record. He is a democrate in sentiment.

Deaths - Norval Hamilton, M/W, age 77, Died; 5-11-1904 DEATH OF NORVAL HAMILTON, a well known citizen of Bellmore, diedsuddenly at the home of his son in law, Bion Collins, at 5 o'clockyesterday afternoon of hemorrage. the funeral will occur at 9 o'clocktomorrow morning. Mr. Hamilton, was about 80 years old. He was foryears engaged in the sawmill business and was a Postmaster at Bellmoreunder Cleveland. He was a Mexican War Veteran. His survivingchildren are Mesadames, John Bulion, dion Collins, Etta Hann, OraDooby, Mattie Smith and Messrs. Kirg, Warren Dole, Alvah Hamilton.Mrs. Hamilton died a year or two ago.
