CHARLES N. DEIGHTON
NARROWSBURG: Charles N. Deighton of Narrowsburg, former owner of a gas station in Narrowsburg and a ten-year area resident, died Tuesday, November 30, 1999, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. He was 85.
Son of the late Harry and Beatrice Dexter Deighton, he was born April 1, 1914 at the family homestead on Conklin Hill in Damascus Township, PA. He was the widower of Margaret Harvey Deighton.
He grew up in Milanville and attended Damascus High School. During the Depression, Charles and his cousin bought a car for $15, traveled to Texas, hitchhiked to California and then hoboed back to Lackawaxen, PA. In the 30?s he worked as a guard at Farview State Hospital in Waymart, PA, and later as a heavy equipment operator for PennDOT. He then drove milk tankers for Floyd Schwartz, Dairylea and others. For a time he owned a grocery store in Kirkwood before returning to his homestead to be a farmer until he retired.
Survivors include three brothers, Richard of Damascus, Donald of Narrowsburg, and Arthur of Honesdale; and four sisters, Mildred Dean of Creamton, PA, Luella Bachota of West Palm Beach, FL, Rose Chapman of Lake Ariel, PA, and Clara Rea of Honesdale; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Irene Finnerty.
Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Paul Williamson, pastor of the Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle, officiated. Burial was in the Indian Orchard Cemetery in Texas Township.
