From a Newpaper Article"Sons of the Pioneers" [Continued from Augustus Cory Lane]

Not many of us remember the circuit riders who traveled the country and stopped at homes of schoolhouses to hold their services. Alton Lane remembers Charles Chase, a Methodist circuit rider who came each Sunday to preach in the Verona School District 33. Mr. Chase conducted services in other schoolhouses , the Salem [near Myron Mineer home], in Center Creek and at the Parker Brothers District in Martin county. Each Sunday, this minister rode a pony from one place to another, to hold these meetings. He also made his home wherever he stopped. Later Mr. Chase married a girl from Center Creek. Perhaps Alton Lane was lucky to be one of the younger members of his family for he could attend school all during the school year. Older brothers would have to help with the crops.
To use Mr. Lane's own words, "I had two of the best teachers in the county, Miss Lydia Bassett and Mrs. Alex Nesmith."
Alton Lane married Glee Wise, a girl who lived on a farm near by. After farming for 25 years in Verona township, they moved to Huntley where Mr. Lane was a stock buyer for over 30 years. The last few years he has spent in retirement. Tis fall Mr. and Mrs. Lane will celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary. Down through the years, Alton Lane has been very interested in music and sports. for a number of years he directed the choir in the Huntley church where he also has served as Sunday school superintendent.
He always enjoyed singing with a quartet. During the flu epidemic of 1918, when other members of the quartet were ill, Alton Lane was soloist 10 times in the course of two weeks. Not until two years later did he have the flu.
Mr. Lane can tell local chaps quite a good deal about baseball, one of his favorite sports. He not only played baseball, but he knew the famous "Clippers" of this community.

Alton married Glee Pearl [Wise] Lane on 20 Aug 1894 in Blue Earth. Glee (daughter of Alexander Phylanzo Wise and Anna Viola [Winn] Wise) was born on 14 Sep 1878; died in 1963 in Huntley, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

From a Newpaper Article"Sons of the Pioneers"
Alton R Lane, a retired business man of Huntley, has resided all his life in that community.
His father Augustus C. Lane, was born in Cattaraugus county, New york, in 1832. When 21 years of age, he came west to Oshkosh, Wis., making that journey on horseback by way of Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago and Milwaukee. Four years later. July, 1857 he came to Winnebago, arriving the day of the Spirit Lake Masacre in Iowa. He took claim to a tract of land, stayed two years, then went back to Wis. to marry Elizabeth Fairbanks.
Several years later Augustus Lane and wife came back to Minnesota and were living in Blue Earth county at the time of the New Ulm massacre in 1862. They were witnesses to this terrible affair.
In 1864 the Lanes settled on a farm in Verona township and resided there for 40 years. It was on this farm that Alton Lane and his Brothers and sisters were born. Perhaps some of them were born in the log house their parents built.

From Lane Family Genealogy by Evertt Richard Lane
Augustus left New York and migrated to Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1853 when he was 21 years old. He spent some time there, then went to Minnesota, but shortly tereafter returned to New York where he remained for ten months before returning to Wisconsin and Minnesota. Later that year they moved to Blue Earth, Minnesota. We was a witness to the massacre in New Ulm in 1863. Later that year they returned to Waupun and in 1864 he make his last move. He returned to Faribault County, Minnesota nad homesteaded 200 acres of land in Verona Township. At first they lived in a log cabin and endured many hardships but over the years he prospered and was able to have a fine house, large barn, grainery, windmill, and a six acre grove. He was an ardent Prohibitionist and an active church member. When he died he still owned the farm he had homesteaded in 1864.

  1. 4.  Amos Lane was born in 1804 in Vermont; died in 1851.

    Notes:

Found in 1850 census in Chautaugua County, New York. At that time he was 46 years old and Lucy was 40 years old. They had seven children. ?The eldest, who was 19 at that time, was named Augustus Lane. This may also be what the A. Lane stood for. Also the second son, Harry Cuyler Lane, and also William Cuyler Lane. The Cuyler may be Lucy's Maiden name. The obituary story from the Oshkosh newspaper indicates they appeared in Oshkosh early in the 1850's, but there is no mention of A. Lane coming to Oshkosh.
A search for the early Lane family members, recently found an Amos Lane in Westchester County, New York. He appears on the 1790 census of this county in the city of Yorktown. Because of the dates it appears he possibly may be the father of our Amos. There is some information the Lanes were from Long Island. There also is some information they were in Rensselear County, not far from Long Island. ?Also the Ebenezer Lane seemed to have roots in Long Island.
Also an Aaron Sanders was found in Westchester County, Which is the name of Lucy Sanders father.

Amos + Lucy [Sanders] Lane. Lucy (daughter of Aaron Sanders) was born in 1810 in Bakersfield, Vermont; died on 17 Mar 1895 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
