1. | Lt.-Col. Alexander John Hew Maclean, 16th of Ardgour was born on 1 Dec 1880 (son of Alexander Thomas Maclean and Selina Phillipa Dicken); died on 27 May 1930. Notes: The Ardgour branch of the Macleans, which held its lands directly from the Lord of the Isles, is descended from Donald, another son of Lachlan, third laird of Dowart. The estate of Ardgour, which is in Argyleshire, had previously belonged to a different tribe (the Macmasters), but it was conferred upon Donald, either by Alexander, Earl of Ross, or by his son and successor, John. In 1463, Ewen or Eugene, son of Donald, held the office of seneschal of the household to the latter earl; and in 1493, Lachlan Macewen Maclean was laird of Ardgour. Alexander Maclean, Esq, the 16th laird of Ardgour, is the 14th from father to son. The 17th laird was his daughter, Riona, and the title then passed to a nephew, Robin Torrie, who has since taken the name Maclean of Ardgour. Alexander married Hon Muriel Annette Burns on 5 Sep 1918 in The Hague, Holland. Muriel (daughter of Sir James Cleland (4th Bt, 3rd Baron Inverclyde) Burns and Charlotte Mary Emily (of Machermore) Nugent-Dunbar) was born in 1893; died on 29 Jan 1969; was buried in Ardgour, Argyllshire, Scotland. The damage, though widespread, was not complete, and everyone relaxed until in 1846 blight struck again, and the whole potato crop was left rotting in the fields. All the consequences of famine then quickly followed. Scurvy and typhus, diseases of malnutrition, killed hundreds. The famine-stricken population, weakened and listless, fell victim to cholera outbreaks, and only help from outside could relieve the situation.
