  1. 1.  James (of Alantin) Steuart was born in 1676 (son of William (of Allanton) Steuart); and died.

    James Steuart of Allanton, (the 6th of that name). He was born an. 1676, and married Cecilia, daughter of David Dunmuir, advocate, and widow of John Lyon of Brigton *.

    James had four sons and seven daughters. The fourth, James, succeeded his father. The others died unmarried. Of the daughters, the 2. Marion, married Andrew M'Dowel of Logan, afterwards Lord Bankton; and, Lillias, married Alexander Murray, brother to John Murray of Lintrose. Her only daughter, Emilia, married, an. 1767, James Guthrie, now of Craigie, and has a numerous issue.

    James lived to the year 1752, and was succeeded by his son, James Steuart of Allanton, (the 7th of that name).

  1. 2.  William (of Allanton) Steuart was born in 1640 (son of Walter (Sir) (of Allanton) Steuart and Margaret (of Broomhill) Hamilton); died in 1672.

    Notes:

    He was born an. 1640, and married his first cousin, Margaret, only daughter of Sir James Steuart, the first of Coltness: In consequence of his connection with his father-in-law and uncle, Sir James, and his brother-in-law, Sir Thomas Steuart, he was persecuted in the troublesome times which preceded the revolution, and fined by the council, in 1684, ??500 Sterling for favouring the covenanters. But afterwards, when his other brother-in-law Sir James became secretary of state, under Lord Melfort, a remission, by King James II. was procured for him, dated an. 1687 . In the same year, he had the offer of a Baronetage, through the same interest, and, on his declining it, it was given to his cousin Sir Robert of Allanbank'.
