2. Sir Alexander (1st Earl of Galloway) Stewart was born about 1580 (son of Alexander (6th of Garlies) Stewart and Christian (of Drumlanrig) Douglas); died in 1649. Notes:
Sir Alexander Stewart was a favorite of James VI (James I of England), who knighted him in 1590 at the coronation of his consort, Queen Anne of Denmark. Sir Alexander married (first) Christian Douglas, daughter of Sir William Douglas, and (second) the Lady Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of David, Earl Angus, and widow of John, seventh Lord Maxwell (Earl of Morton). He died on October 9, 1649, leaving five children. Sir Alexander Stewart was elevated to the peerage, July 19, 1607, by the title of Baron of Garlies, and on September 19, 1623, was advanced to the Earl of Galloway.
Alexander married Grisel (of Lochinvar) Gordon on 16 Oct 1600. Grisel (daughter of Sir John (5th of Lochinvar) Gordon and Elizabeth (of Herris) Maxwell) was born about 1598; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

This Sir Alexander, who now came into possession of the seat of the Hannays, was in great favor with James VI, who knighted him in 1590 at the coronation of his consort. Queen Aiuie of Denmark. Sir Alexander married (ist.) Christian, daughter of Sir William Douglas and (2nd) the Lady Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of David, Earl Angus, and widow of John, 7th Lord Maxwell (Earl of Morton). He died 9, Oct. 1596, leaving issue five children. His son and heir Sir Alexander Stewart, a man of great talent, loyalty and integrity, was elevated to the Peerage 19 of Jnly 1607 by the title of Baron of Garlies, and upon the 19 of Sept. 1623 was advanced to the Eari. of Galloway.
