    Notes:

    An only son
    Appointed by James VI., in 1624, esquire of his body, James Hay of Smithfield was, July 20, 1635, created a baronet of Nova Scotia, the patent being accompanied by a grant of land in Nova Scotia, to be thenceforth called the barony and regality of Smithfield.
